Tulips in the Snow

Took these pics April 24, 2008 in Brandon. Tulips in the snow always make me think of the Steve Goodman song, the Dutchman. .....He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow. He's mad as he can be but Margret only sees that sometimes, most times she see her unborn children in his eyes.

Came across some great clips of Goodman on YouTube. The Dutchman.

The Ballad of Penny Evans still is an all time great song.

Foul Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart

The Circus Animals’ Desertion
William Butler Yeats

I

I sought a theme and sought for it in vain,
I sought it daily for six weeks or so.
Maybe at last, being but a broken man,
I must be satisfied with my heart, although
Winter and summer till old age began
My circus animals were all on show,
Those stilted boys, that burnished chariot,
Lion and woman and the Lord knows what.

II

What can I but enumerate old themes?
First that sea-rider Oisin led by the nose
Through three enchanted islands, allegorical dreams,
Vain gaiety, vain battle, vain repose,
Themes of the embittered heart, or so it seems,
That might adorn old songs or courtly shows;
But what cared I that set him on to ride,
I, starved for the bosom of his faery bride?

And then a counter-truth filled out its play,
‘The Countess Cathleen’ was the name I gave it;
She, pity-crazed, had given her soul away,
But masterful Heaven had intetvened to save it.
I thought my dear must her own soul destroy,
So did fanaticism and hate enslave it,
And this brought forth a dream and soon enough
This dream itself had all my thought and love.

And when the Fool and Blind Man stole the bread
Cuchulain fought the ungovernable sea;
Heart-mysteries there, and yet when all is said
It was the dream itself enchanted me:
Character isolated by a deed
To engross the present and dominate memory.
players and painted stage took all my love,
And not those things that they were emblems of.

III

Those masterful images because complete
Grew in pure mind, but out of what began?
A mound of refuse or the sweepings of a street,
Old kettles, old bottles, and a broken can,
Old iron, old bones, old rags, that raving slut
Who keeps the till. Now that my ladder’s gone,
I must lie down where all the ladders start
In the foul rag-and-bone shop of the heart.

Amelia

My gorgeous daughter Ingrid Amelia was named in part for the Joni Mitchell song Amelia.
Ingie is now recording her own music and her manager says she should use her second name professionally. I agree.
Here is a link to her Spring Tour.

I love Joni's crazy open tuning on this. CGCEGC

I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
It was the strings of my guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

The drone of flying engines
Is a song so wild and blue
It scrambles time and seasons if it gets thru to you
Then your life becomes a travelogue
Of picture-post-card-charms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

People will tell you where theyve gone
Theyll tell you where to go
But till you get there yourself you never really know
Where some have found their paradise
Others just come to harm
Oh amelia, it was just a false alarm

I wish that he was here tonight
Its so hard to obey
His sad request of me to kindly stay away
So this is how I hide the hurt
As the road leads cursed and charmed
I tell amelia, it was just a false alarm

A ghost of aviation
She was swallowed by the sky
Or by the sea, like me she had a dream to fly
Like icarus ascending
On beautiful foolish arms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

Maybe Ive never really loved
I guess that is the truth
Ive spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude
And looking down on everything
I crashed into his arms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

I pulled into the cactus tree motel
To shower off the dust
And I slept on the strange pillows of my wanderlust
I dreamed of 747s
Over geometric farms
Dreams, amelia, dreams and false alarms

It was born at the junction of form and function...

..it's the hammer of the honky tonk gods.

This line is from the Bill Kirchen tribute to the Fender Telecaster, on the album Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods.
He lists all the musical greats that play a Tele.

Bruce, Soul of a Man

Soul of a Man, Blind Willie Johnson

Open tuning CGCGCE played around the 3 and 5 frets.

Won't somebody tell me, answer if you can!

Is there anybodies children can tell me, what is the soul of a man?

I'm going to ask the question, answer if you can

If anybody here can tell me, what is the soul of a man?

I've traveled in different countries, I've traveled foreign lands
I've found nobody to tell me, what is the soul of a man

I saw a crowd stand talking, I just came up in time
Were hearing the doctor and the lawyer, say a man ain't nothing but his mind

I read the bible often, I try to read it right
As far as I can understand, it is nothing but a burning light.

When Christ stood in the temple, the people stood amazed
Was showing the doctors and the lawyers, how to raise a body from the grave

Life Short Call Now

My new absolute favorite album. Life Short Call now

Some of my favorite lines from some of the songs.

From "Mystery".. "I was built on a Friday, so you can't fix me.....

From "This is Baghdad"... "Everything is broken in the birthplace of law. "

From "To Fit in my Heart"....Sea's to big to fit in the frame..and God's too big to fit in a book
Nothings too big to fit in my heart.

From "Different when it comes to you" ....
She told herself a story, That flat out wasn't true....

Blues Online Johnny Shines

Heard this on Dust My Broom Friday night Beer and Blues, June 23, 2006. Darcy is really getting into the podcasting. He featured a great tune called Too Wet to Plow. Slide guitar and a high keening vocal. Very neat!

Delbert McClinton - Cost Of Living

Delbert McClinton - Cost Of Living

One of the Fortunate Few.

Well for one thing.... there was a whole lot of other guys
would have liked to be in my shoes.
But the upkeep on a woman like that
Would give an old poor boy the blues.
Still the pleasure was worth the pain
Of everything she put me through
And I consider myself one of the fortunate few.

Yeah and another thing.... She wasn't just good looking,
her imagination just wouldn't quit.
She made you do thing you never thought about
and things you wouldn't wanna admit.
There must be somebody else out there
who feels about her like I do,
Still I consider myself one of the fortunate few.

It felt so good and hurt so bad,
the best and the worst that I ever had,
I know I bit off a little more than I could chew,
Still I consider myself one of the fortunate few.

Well that's the last thing.... I'm gonna tell you
some things are better left unsaid.
A gentleman don't go talking about
What happens in a womans bed,
Cause that's all I got to say,
I'll leave the rest up to you
But I consider myself one of the fortunate few.
